» What is the JanaServer 2?

JanaServer 2 - Administration The JanaServer 2 is amongst other things a proxy server, that makes it possible for LAN members, everyone or a group as a part of the LAN, to access the internet via a Modem, ISDN or DSL connection. For this the program must be installed on the computer, that can access the internet by an installed modem, ISDN or a DSL adapter. No additional program on the other LAN computers is necessary.

Furthermore the JanaServer is an e-mail server that permits the users on the local net to send each other e-mails or make it possible for every single user to send e-mails over the internet. Every user can have his e-mail account with a different provider. A HTTP server, which allows testing of local web sites or to serve an intranet, is also integrated. It is possible to set up Perl/CGI-, PHP3/4- and ASP-scripts for several functions you may want to have.

Further functions which are incorporated in the program: a FTP server, a DNS forewarder, acting as a DNS server in a LAN and gateway functions for FTP programs, Telnet, Newsreader and custom gateways.

» What the JanaServer 2 is not!

Jana isn't a Router or NAT-(Network Address Translation) software, so that programs without Proxy/Firewall settings are not able to connect directly to the internet because no ports can be opened. This mainly concerns games and audio/video software over internet. Some of these programs may work with tools like Hummingbird's socks client or Sockscap.

» How was the program conceived?

From desire, curiosity and need. Where does the name Jana come from? From Danielas little daughter Jana (15). When I started to write this program it was called "Proxy". However, as I installed it the first time on another computer I thought "Proxy" is too little and considered different names. I considered "THProxy" and other names but nothing really convinced me. In the end "Jana" was left over which in addition is short and easy to memorise.

To whom I express my gratitude: Daniela, Jana and Manuel they have supported and tolerated my work in my leisure time. I am especially grateful to René Marscheider () who designed and programmed this site, as well as establishing and careing for the JanaServer 2 - forum (www.janaforum.de).

» Information!

I was often asked which programming language I have used. Jana was writen in with Visual C++. I did not use the MFC but exclusively the STL library. I am asked again and again where I have the information about the internet and the network programming from, too. This is simple. I have the information about network programming from books and the help system of Visual C++. I have the information about the internet and its protocols mostly from RFC documents, freely available in the internet.

The code to the JanaServer 2 is not availably, it is a Closed-Source program!
